Treatment of anxiety disorders is a three-pronged approach: drugs, behavioral techniques and psychotherapy. As you may know, there are many antidepressant, anti-anxiety and other drugs on the market that provide a wide range of therapeutic effects, Paxil is an antidepressant that has also been shown to be effective in some people with panic disorder.
Behavioral techniques include meditation and relaxation (especially effective in controlling the physiologic symptoms), desensitization (gradual exposure to less threatening anxiety- producing situations), and emotive imagery (imagining the anxiety-producing situation while relaxing).
Relaxation is key to all three behavioral approaches. There are many ways to learn how to relax, including mediation and some types of yoga. In all cases, however, you will have to practice frequently (often on a daily basis) to get the full benefit.
I’ve recently started using a new CD from a company called CenterPointe to help me meditate better, and even though I’ve only been using it a few days (it arrived earlier this week) I’ve started to notice the improvements in my moods already. I feel a lot more positive within myself and lots happier too. I tried the free demo CD first for a few days, and even noticed some improvements with that, so decided to “upgrade” to the real McCoy.
Dealing with social anxiety disorders and the varied symptoms can be extremely difficult and at times seem like it's impossible. And the ever increasing range of anxiety medications isn't really helping us to solve the problem - they're simply masking the symptoms.
